When you save a file as a ZIP, your computer runs a two-stage algorithm. First, it scans the byte stream for repeated patterns and replaces them with pointers — "copy 42 bytes from 43 positions back." This is Lempel–Ziv, or LZ77. Second, it replaces the most common remaining symbols with shorter bit-codes — Huffman coding. Both stages are reversible: given the compressed token, you can reconstruct the original exactly.
The brain does something structurally similar when it generates conscious experience — but the geometry is inverted, the dimensionality is the key variable, and the "decompression" is not lossless reconstruction but perceptual expansion. Understanding the analogy clarifies why conscious access is narrow, why high arousal makes perception richer, and why the amplitude of a neural burst should be the lever controlling phenomenal vividness.
LZ77 scans a data stream with a sliding window. At each position, it asks: does a string starting here also appear somewhere earlier in the window? If yes, it emits a match token (length, distance) instead of the raw bytes. If no match long enough is found, it emits a literal token — the raw byte. The result is a token stream of interleaved literals and back-references that is typically much shorter than the original.
As a concrete example, consider compressing the string:
The match token [3,3] means: "go back 3 characters, copy 3 bytes" — recovering "is ". The match token [42,43] means: "go back 43 characters, copy 42 bytes" — recovering the entire first sentence. Eighty-six bytes of input compress to 43 tokens, many of which are single-byte literals.

What LZ77 exploits is temporal redundancy: patterns that appear more than once in a flat, sequential stream. The compressed token is a recipe for reconstruction, not the thing itself.
LZ77 says nothing about the structure of the data — it treats bytes as a flat sequence. It cannot exploit the fact that a JPEG encodes spatial neighborhoods, or that an audio file encodes harmonic structure. Its compression is purely sequential. This is important because the brain's content is not a flat byte stream — it is a posed 3D geometry. The analogue to LZ77 in the brain is therefore not sequential back-reference but something richer: geometric back-reference, retrieving an object or scene from the Bank $\B$ by pose rather than by byte offset.
After LZ77, the token stream still contains many symbols — literal byte values, length codes, distance codes. Huffman coding assigns a variable-length binary code to each symbol, with shorter codes for more frequent symbols. The result is that "e" (frequent in English) might be encoded in 7 bits while a rare punctuation byte requires 9. The codes are prefix-free, so decompression is unambiguous.
Together, LZ77 and Huffman form DEFLATE — the algorithm inside every ZIP, gzip, and PNG file. The two stages attack redundancy at different levels: LZ77 removes repetition across the stream; Huffman removes symbol-frequency imbalance within the remaining tokens.

Both LZ77 and Huffman operate on a one-dimensional byte stream. They are clever algorithms for exploiting statistical structure in that stream. But they share a fundamental property: the compressed representation is still a flat token sequence. Decompression is a deterministic algorithm that runs forward through the token stream and reconstructs the original, byte for byte.
This is critical: the "decompressor" in DEFLATE has no model of what the data means. It reconstructs mechanically. A picture of a face and a picture of noise compress differently (faces compress better) but the decompressor doesn't know it's looking at a face — it just follows the tokens.
The brain's situation is the opposite. The brain has a very rich model — the Bank $\B$ — and uses it to do something far more powerful than token replay.
Ring Bank Theory (RBT) proposes that conscious access does not sample the full 3D content of the Bank $\B$ at once. Instead, the printing operator $\Pi$ operates on a low-dimensional access manifold $\A(t) \subseteq \B$, which is a 0–2D submanifold: a point, a curve, a surface, or something in between. What gets deposited into the Time Schema $\T$ at any given moment is a ringframe $\rho(t)$ — the material printed on $\A$, not the full 3D volume.
The ringframe is the compressed token. It is geometrically thin — potentially as thin as a single traversal of a curve — but it is not a flat byte sequence. It is a posed geometric event in $\Sim(3)$: it carries scale, orientation, translation, and shape information that, together with the Bank it samples from, is sufficient to reconstruct a rich 3D percept.
In DEFLATE, the decompressor has a fixed algorithm: given a token, it reconstructs the original bytes completely and losslessly. In the brain, decompression is not fixed — it is amplitude-dependent.
The mic signal $\M(t)$ is a transient, structured drive that modulates the printing operator $\Pi$. When $\M(t)$ is large — during active perception, high arousal, or intense attention — the ringframe can expand into a vividly painted, spatially detailed 3D conscious frame. When $\M(t)$ is small or quiescent, the printstream reduces to skeletal geometry: outlines, rough structure, perhaps color without detail, or in the extreme, pure timing with no geometric content at all.
This is the key phenomenological prediction: the amplitude of the neural burst is the lever that controls how fully a compressed geometric token decompresses into rich conscious experience.

In the most compressed mode of conscious access, the ringframe reduces to a pure mic transient: a point event in time with almost no geometric content — just a timing spike carrying a salience tag and a conceptual address (the aboutness vector $\vec{C}$). This is the analogue of a single Huffman code in isolation: almost no bits, maximum redundancy exploitation, but only useful if the receiver has the full dictionary (the Bank) and can reconstruct from context.
This extreme compression corresponds phenomenologically to what happens at the boundary of sleep, in dissociation, or under deep sedation: conscious content is no longer a richly painted 3D scene but a sequence of sparse "blips" or "cards," each carrying minimal geometric information but enough temporal and conceptual structure to orient the system. The Bank is still there; the reconstruction machinery is still there; only the amplitude — $\M(t)$ — has dropped below the threshold that would allow full decompression.
In DEFLATE, decompression is a forward pass through the token stream: literals are emitted directly; match tokens trigger a copy from the output buffer. The output buffer at time $t$ is everything decoded so far — the "expanded" history.

The kernel $G(t-\tau)$ weights recent ringframes by recency (fading). The Real and Imaginal schemas $\R$ and $\I$ are the expanded, 3D readouts — the "decompressed output." They are constructed from recent ringframes plus the current state of the schemas themselves — exactly like an LZ77 decompressor that uses its own output buffer as the back-reference source.
What controls the quality of this decompression? In DEFLATE the answer is trivial — the algorithm is fixed. In the brain the answer is the amplitude and structure of $\M(t)$. A strong mic signal allows full Sim(3) pose resolution of the Bank, rich paint via radiance sphere $L_\text{perc}(\omega)$, and deep semantic interpretation. A weak or absent mic signal allows only coarse pose, no paint, and minimal semantics — a skeleton scene at best.

One might object: is this analogy not purely rhetorical? ZIP files have nothing to do with neurons. The response is that the compression/decompression structure is not an analogy imposed from outside but a consequence of the architecture RBT proposes:
Under ketamine, dissociatives, or deep sedation, beta/gamma power collapses and global dynamics slow toward delta. RBT interprets this as a progressive reduction in $\M(t)$ amplitude: the Bank and its geometric structure are preserved (patients retain implicit knowledge of themselves and their world), but the mic signal cannot sustain full decompression. Patients report fragmented, low-detail imagery or none at all — consistent with ringframes reducing toward 0D blips that the readout machinery cannot fully expand.
A gross-to-fine chirp ($\sim 4 \rightarrow 40$ Hz over ~500 ms) prints successive geometric refinements into $\T$, with paint arriving late. This is the temporal signature of partial decompression followed by full decompression: the low-frequency print gives pose and outline (the "pointer"), and the subsequent high-frequency activity fleshes out detail and color (the "copy"). LZ77 has no such temporal structure — it reconstructs immediately. The brain's decompression is intrinsically time-extended.
Individual differences in mental imagery vividness (aphantasia vs. hyperphantasia) correspond, in this framework, to differences in the gain of $\M(t)$ driving the imaginal printing operator. High gain = strong mic transients = full decompression of Bank geometry into $\I$ with paint. DEFLATE compresses a high-entropy byte stream into a lower-entropy bitstream. It works best when the source has redundancy. The brain's situation is the opposite in a crucial sense: the source (the world) is high-dimensional, but the Bank has already extracted the redundancy — it is a learned manifold of shapes and scenes, not a raw byte stream. The brain then compresses access to this manifold, not the manifold itself. The ringframe is a thin sample of an already-compressed representation. Decompression is then expansion — using the Bank's learned geometry plus the mic signal's power to recover the full 3D phenomenal scene.
This is the fundamental inversion: ZIP compresses by removing redundancy from raw data. The brain compresses by reducing the dimensionality of access to an already-structured internal model, and decompresses by expanding that access using amplitude-gated reconstruction. The Bank is the compression artifact; the ringframe is the pointer into it; the $\R$/$\I$ readout is the decompressed output; and $\M(t)$ is the decompressor's power supply.
DEFLATE's LZ77 + Huffman pipeline is a clean example of two-stage compression applied to flat byte streams. The brain performs a structurally analogous operation in a higher-dimensional, geometric setting: the Bank provides the dictionary; the access manifold provides the compressed pointer; the mic signal provides the decompression power; and the Real/Imaginal readout provides the expanded conscious scene. Unlike DEFLATE, the brain's decompression is lossy in a phenomenologically meaningful way — the degree of expansion from pointer to full scene is continuously controlled by the amplitude of the driving signal. This makes the analogy more than rhetorical: it is a mechanistic proposal about why conscious experience has the bandwidth it has, why vividness tracks arousal, and why the geometry of access — ringframes, bank traversal, $\Sim(3)$ posing — is the right level at which to describe the compression that makes consciousness possible.
